Summer is best spent outdoors. Here are a few inexpensive ideas that will make your backyard THE place to be this summer:
Who knew that pool noodles could be so much fun OUTSIDE the pool? Hit your local store and grab a handful of these colorful, inexpensive noodles to create a safe and fun-filled obstacle course for all of your little aspiring athletes.
Fortresses, tents and castles…oh my!
Enliven imagination and creativity by supplying your young explorers with materials that they need to make their own fort, tent or any other hideaway they can come up with. Old sheets & blankets, cardboard boxes, chairs, string, tape and magic markers = an epic afternoon of building.
If your crew is not in a crafty mood and you are willing to spend a little money, an easy-to-assemble teepee provides a fun, kids-only place to play without the work.
Bonus: This can also double as an indoor activity if the weather isn’t cooperating.
If your little one is too young for obstacle courses and fort making, but still wants to get in on some backyard fun, grab a bowl of cool water and fill it with an assortment of rings – anything you would be okay with him/her putting in his/her mouth. Stay close and help them splash around and grab all of the different shapes and colors.
Don’t forget to take a break from all of the backyard activities. Make sure to have snacks on hand, too – having fun really works up an appetite! Keep to the finger-food picnic theme and try out a few of our favorites. These would be great to eat in their newly built fort!
Peanut Butter, Jelly Time – Put a twist on this classic sandwich by cutting it into little squares, sliding them onto a stick and alternating them with your child’s favorite fruit. If you are looking for a peanut butter alternative, try a sunflower seed spread or a soy nut butter.
Butterfly Snack Pouches – These super-easy-to-make snack bags are adorable. You can fill each side with your child’s favorite snacks – goldfish, grapes, crackers, cereal…the options are endless.
Watermelon Popsicles – Yes, please! What’s not to love about these? The kids will get a kick out of eating watermelon on a popsicles stick. It’s the quintessential summer snack!
